"This sculpture is a predecessor of the Little Princess, a portrait of her mother Queen Mariana from a painting by Velázquez.
The sculptural quality of the hair as well as the facial expression of this aristocrat, are the inspirations for my version of this exquisite painting.
At the time Velázquez painted this masterpiece, his model was a nineteen year old foreign bride, whose life's mission was to produce a sound male heir. The painting perfectly captures the state-of-mind of a young princess petulance and melancholy inspired by subservience. It's a portrait of a woman imprisoned by the strange repressive fashions of her time, as well as the psychological-weight of her life's circumstances."
